Brian fell in love with brewing beer while living in England studying British politics and experiencing true "real ale" in the form of a cask. Following graduation, he moved to Colorado where he took his affinity for beer one step further; volunteering at a Vail brewery at night while operating ski lifts during the day. He soon became a paid employee and a full-time brewer.
During his time in Vail he met some people that would later become his business partners at a brewpub in Oklahoma. Opening in 1993, it grew to include a brewery and four satellite restaurants. After his success in the brewing/restaurant industry, he decided to escape the restaurant side of things and open a full production brewery in Austin, TX. On his 40th birthday, he poured the slab for the location that would become Thirsty Planet Brewing Company.
